Young workers are turning away from the information and communication sector

Statistics Estonia's short-term labour market statistics show that over the past year and a half, there have been fewer young people aged 20–29 working in both the broader information and communication sector and the more specific field of computer programming. While in previous years the field of computer programming was growing mainly because of young people, in the past year their numbers have fallen.

Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before

According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

In January industrial production was smaller than a year ago

According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2014, the production of industrial enterprises decreased by 1% compared to January of the previous year. The decline in production was caused by a decrease in electricity production; however, the production in manufacturing and mining increased slightly.

Construction volumes stayed on the level of the previous year

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2013 the total production of Estonian construction enterprises in Estonia and in foreign countries amounted to 2.2 billion euros, which is 0.7% more than in 2012. If only the Estonian construction market is considered, the construction volumes grew 2%.

Statistics Estonia made a new population projection until 2040

According to Statistics Estonia’s projection, if the current demographic trends continue, the population of Estonia will decrease by 125,000 in the next roughly 30 years due to negative natural increase and negative net migration. Thus, the projected population of Estonia in 2040 will be 1,195,000.

Unemployment increased slightly at the end of the year

According to Statistics Estonia, unemployed persons numbered 59,000 and the unemployment rate was 8.7% in the 4th quarter of 2013. Although the annual average unemployment rate was lower than in 2012, the decline of unemployment has slowed down.

The total number of real estate transactions increased last year

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2013, 41,650 purchase-sale transactions of real estate in the total value of 2.0 billion euros were notarised. In 2013, the number of transactions increased by 15% compared to 2012 and the total value of transactions increased by 18%.

Economic growth stopped in the 4th quarter

According to the flash estimates of Statistics Estonia, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Estonia in the 4th quarter of 2013 stayed at the same level compared to the 4th quarter of 2012. In 2013, the Estonian economy grew 0.7% compared to the previous year.

Last year Estonia’s trade decreased

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2013, exports of goods decreased by 2% and imports by 1% at current prices, compared to 2012. In 2013, exports and imports decreased after three years of successive growth.
