Population census project to be headed by Liina Osila

Liina Osila has worked for the past 11 years as a project manager and analyst, most recently at the Estonian Emergency Response Centre, where she managed the project of the crisis helpline 1247. The state helpline was adopted during the emergency situation last spring. Prior to that, Osila was a project manager and analyst at think tank Praxis. She was in charge of the preparation, planning and implementation of various surveys and training projects.

According to Osila, a great amount of work has been done for the success of the population census, but in the case of large-scale projects, the way it is finalised is of critical importance. “For me, the Population and Housing Census is a project with a mission, involving all people living in Estonia. It is a huge responsibility, but the goal is in place and major work has already been completed. Now, it is important to keep focus and tie up the loose ends. There is still a little more than a year until the start of the census, but as soon as next week, we will start with the test survey, which is the main rehearsal for the census,” said Osila.

Director General of Statistics Estonia Mart Mägi said that the Population and Housing Census 2021 is special, as for the first time, most of the necessary data are obtained from state databases. “The Population and Housing Census is a priority for Statistics Estonia, and we have been working for its success for more than ten years. Adding to our team at such an important stage of the census a project manager who is results-driven and has great leadership experience is a gift for all those involved,” said Mägi.

The census moment of the Population and Housing Census is at 00:00 on 31 December 2021. All data for the population census must be submitted as at the census moment, irrespective of the time and mode of response. Data of state databases, i.e. register data, are used in the census, and people are asked only for the information for which there are no data in the registers.
