In September, the number of tourists in accommodation establishments remained at the level of the previous year
In September, 153,000 foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments, and compared to September 2012, the number of foreign tourists decreased by 2%. More than half of the foreign tourists arrived from neighbouring countries. The number of tourists from Russia increased by a tenth, the number of tourists from Finland and Latvia remained at the level of September 2012. While fewer tourists arrived from several European countries, the number of tourists from Asian countries staying in accommodation establishments increased by a third in comparison with last September. Three quarters of accommodated foreign tourists stayed in the accommodation establishments of Northern Estonia, 12% in Western Estonia, 8% in Southern Estonia, and the remaining 5% in Central and North-Eastern Estonia.
The decrease in the number of foreign tourists staying in accommodation establishments was compensated for by an increase in the number of domestic tourists. In September, 70,000 domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 5% more than in the same month of the previous year. More than half of accommodated domestic tourists were on a holiday and 35% on a business trip. Compared to August, the share of business trips increased and the share of holiday trips decreased. Half of the domestic tourists stayed in the accommodation establishments of Western and Southern Estonia and 29% in Northern Estonia. The accommodation establishments located in North-Eastern and Central Estonia were used less by domestic tourists.
In September, 1,019 accommodation establishments offered services for tourists. Tourists had a total of 20,000 rooms and 45,000 beds at their disposal. The room occupancy rate was 43% and the bed occupancy rate was 33%. In Tallinn, the room occupancy rate and the bed occupancy rate were higher than the Estonian average.
The average cost of a guest night was 33 euros, which is a euro more than in September of the previous year. In Tallinn, the average cost of a guest night was 40 euros.
