According to Statistics Estonia, at midnight the e-census of the pilot Census of PHC 2011 came to an end. In the course of e-census, 5497 persons were enumerated via Internet. In March the pilot Census will be continued with face-to-face interviews, when the interviewers of Statistics Estonia visit the inhabitants who did not participate in e-census.

In the course of e-census of the pilot Census of PHC 2011 which came to an end yesterday midnight, by preliminary data 5497 persons were enumerated, of whom 1882 live in the regions of the pilot Census. “These are encouraging numbers, which show that many persons are ready to enumerate themselves and their households on the Internet,” said Diana Beltadze, the Project Manager of PHC 2011. The pilot Census is carried out in nine local governments and the total number of persons living in the pilot Census regions is slightly over 10,000, of which 18 % were enumerated electronically. “In other countries the participation rate in the first e-census has remained more likely below 10%,” added Ms Beltadze.

By preliminary data, of the pilot Census regions, the participation in e-census was most active in Peetri village (592), in Kelvingi and Rohuneeme villages in Viimsi rural municipality (327), somewhat smaller in Pärnu-Jaagupi (205), Paide (189) and Aravete (147).

“The interest in e-census among persons living outside the pilot Census regions is a positive sign. We are grateful to all participants who contributed to the testing of the new system,” remarked Ms Beltadze.

The pilot Census of PHC 2011 lasting for three months is carried out in two parts: e-census (from 31 December 2009 to 21 February 2010) and face-to-face interviews (from 5 to 31 March 2010), where enumerators visit those households who did not participate in e-census or whose questionnaires were incomplete.

In the course of the pilot Census of PHC 2011 over 10,000 persons and their dwellings will be enumerated. Different regions and settlement units all over Estonia have been selected for the pilot Census in order to test thoroughly the organization and information systems of the census. The pilot Census is carried out in Tallinn, Narva, Püssi, Pärnu-Jaagupi, Paide, Aravete, and in Rae, Rõuge and Viimsi rural municipalities (for detailed information see /uudised/phc2011).

In 2011 the Population Census will be conducted for the eleventh time on the territory of Estonia. The previous censuses were carried out in 1881, 1897, 1922, 1934, 1941, 1959, 1970, 1979, 1989 and 2000. In 2010 and 2011 Population and Housing Censuses will be held in the majority of countries all over the world.
