The turnover of retail trade enterprises grew by 4% last year
According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises in 2020 was nearly 7.7 billion euros. Compared to 2019, turnover increased by 4% at constant prices.
Jaanika Tiigiste, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, in 2020, stores selling manufactured goods had the biggest increase in turnover at 6%, and there was a 4% increase in the turnover of grocery stores. “At the same time, turnover fell by 4% in enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel,” added Tiigiste.
In December 2020, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 736 million euros. Compared to December 2019, turnover increased by 7%.
In December, the turnover of stores selling manufactured goods increased by 9%. The greatest increase in turnover at 30% was recorded in stores selling via mail order or the internet. Turnover increased by 18% in other specialised stores selling predominantly computers and their accessories, books, sports equipment, games, toys, etc., by 12% in stores selling household goods and appliances, hardware and building materials, by 12% in stores selling second-hand goods and in non-store retail sale (stalls, markets, direct sale), and by 2% in pharmacies and stores selling cosmetics. Turnover decreased by 16% in stores selling textiles, clothing and footwear, and by 4% in other non-specialised stores selling predominantly manufactured goods (department stores).

Compared to November, the turnover of retail trade enterprises grew by 13%, which is customary due to the Christmas and year-end sales happening in December.
The statistics are based on the VAT declaration data of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. Statistics Estonia performs the statistical activity “Financial statistics of trade enterprises (monthly)” for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in order to determine how the Estonian economy is doing.
