The aim of experimental statistics is to seek new ways of producing statistics that would allow users quick and convenient access to relevant and necessary information.

To produce experimental statistics we use:

data linking and combining;
new data sources (e.g. electricity consumption data of Elering, data of mobile network operators);
new methods (e.g. web scraping, machine learning);
modern visualisation solutions (e.g. R Shiny and Flourish).

The output of experimental statistics may diverge from the traditional requirements of official statistics such as harmonisation, coverage

Purpose of contract work Contract work allows the acquisition of more detailed information than Statistics Estonia has provided in news releases, statistical publications, or in the statistical database. Additional data processing or analysis is required to carry out contract work. Statistical data of greater detail can be ordered in any statistical domain. This service does not cover the use of confidential data for scientific purposes . Research and development in Estonia is driven by the business sector

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2019, the expenditures on research and development (R&D) in Estonia amounted to 453 million euros, which is 24% more than in 2018. The share of R&D expenditures in the gross domestic product was 1.61%, making it the highest share in the last five years.

The volume of aquaculture production sold fell last year

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2015, the total amount of commercial fish and crayfish sold by aquaculture enterprises was 795 tonnes, with a total value of 3.3 million euros. Compared to 2014, the amount of fish and crayfish production sold has decreased 8% and the monetary value of production – 3%.

The earnings application, first published more than a year ago, was upgraded by Statistics Estonia together with the Commissioner for Equal Opportunities, University of Tartu, Tallinn University of Technology and the Social Insurance Board. More occupational groups, comparison of males’ and females’ monthly earnings, and earnings and pension projections were added to the application.

E-census is open from the end of December

At the end of the year, on 28 December, the Population and Housing Census, conducted every ten years, starts in Estonia. Everyone living in Estonia is invited to complete an online questionnaire for the census by 22 January 2022. In February, census takers will call or visit the people for whom filling in the questionnaire is mandatory.

Statistics Estonia: mobility has decreased during the emergency situation

The preliminary results of the mobility analyses prepared for the crisis commission show that the emergency situation has resulted in decreased mobility of people. For the mobility analysis, Statistics Estonia uses aggregate tables on the movement of mobile phone numbers prepared by Elisa, Tele2 and Telia. Real-time data of the clients of mobile operators were not used. It is not possible to analyse the movement patterns of individuals on the basis of the anonymous data. Statistics Estonia will publish more detailed results on April 8.

Electricity production from renewable energy sources increasing steadily

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2020, power plants produced 5,516 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity, which is three quarters of last year’s production. The volume of electricity produced from oil shale decreased by a half.
