In September, the number of accommodated tourists fell by a half
According to Statistics Estonia, 154,000 tourists stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments in September, with a total of 285,000 nights spent. The number of tourists decreased by nearly a half year on year.
According to Helga Laurmaa, analyst at Statistics Estonia, three quarters of the guests staying at accommodation establishments were domestic tourists and a quarter were foreign tourists. “The number of accommodated foreign tourists reached only a fifth of last year’s figure, and even though the number of domestic tourists increased, there was a 48% decrease in the total number of accommodated tourists,” explained Laurmaa.
Accommodation establishments served 116,000 domestic tourists whose nights spent totalled 196,000. Compared to September 2019, the number of domestic tourists grew by 10% and their nights spent by 11%. The largest share of domestic tourists were accommodated in Harju county, followed by Pärnu, Tartu and Ida-Viru counties.
The number of foreign tourists staying at accommodation establishments was 38,000, which is 80% less than in September last year. The biggest share of foreign tourists were from Finland (16,000 tourists), followed by Latvia with 6,000 tourists and Lithuania with 3,000 tourists. Compared to September 2019, there was a 72% decrease in the number of tourists from Finland and a 55% decrease in the number of tourists from Latvia and Lithuania staying at accommodation establishments. Foreign tourists spent a total of 89,000 nights in Estonia, which is 76% less than last year. The biggest share of foreign tourists were accommodated in Harju country, followed by Pärnu, Tartu and Ida-Viru counties.
In September, 1,089 accommodation establishments were open for tourists. The average cost of a guest night was 33 euros, which is 7 euros lower than in September 2019. The average cost of a guest night was 42 euros in Tartu county, 33 euros in Harju and Pärnu counties, and 30 euros in Ida-Viru county.
