In July, domestic tourism was popular
According to Statistics Estonia, in July, 346,000 tourists stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments. Their total number of nights spent was 652,000. Compared to July 2019, the number of tourists dropped by a third, but the number was higher than in the last few months.
According to Helga Laurmaa, analyst at Statistics Estonia, July is the top month of the high season in tourism. “Compared to last year, domestic tourism recovered faster, and even grew. 210,000 domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, and their nights spent totalled 393,000. Compared to July 2019, the number of domestic tourists increased by 8% and their nights spent by 7%,” explained Laurmaa.
Of the domestic tourists, 77% were on holiday and 11% were on a business trip. The largest share, i.e. 17% of domestic tourists stayed in Pärnu county, 13% stayed in Harju county, 12% in Ida-Viru county, 11% in Tartu county and 10% in Saare county.
Foreign tourists who used the services of accommodation establishments numbered 136,000, which is 58% less than in July 2019. The largest number, i.e. 81,000, came from Finland, 19,000 tourists came from Latvia and 10,000 from Lithuania. While the number of Finnish tourists decreased by 41% year on year and the number of Latvian tourists by 5%, there were 7% more tourists from Lithuania. Of foreign tourists, 83% came to Estonia for holiday, 13% came on business and the rest had some other reason for visiting. Foreign tourists spent 259,000 nights in Estonia, which is 59% less than in July 2019. Of foreign tourists, 58% stayed in the accommodation establishments of Harju county, 18% in Pärnu county, 9% in Tartu county and 6% in Saare county.
In July, 1,238 accommodation establishments were available for tourists. The average cost of a guest night was 32 euros. Compared to July 2019, the cost was 8 euros lower. In Pärnu county, the average cost of a guest night was 40 euros, in Tartu county 34 euros, in Harju county 33 euros, in Ida-Viru county 32 euros and in Saare county 31 euros.
