Production decreased in most manufacturing activities
According to Statistics Estonia, in August 2020, the production of industrial enterprises decreased by 5% compared to August 2019. Production decreased in manufacturing but increased in energy and mining.
According to Helle Bunder, analyst at Statistics Estonia, manufacturing production decreased by 6% compared to last year’s August. “The volume of production decreased equally in June, but July was a positive exception during the coronavirus pandemic, as the production volume was the same as the year before,” added Bunder.
Two thirds of manufacturing activities recorded a decline in production volumes. Among the activities with the largest shares, the biggest decreases were seen in the manufacture of metal products and electrical equipment, with production falling by 19% and 8%, respectively. Production increased by a fifth in the manufacture of computers and electronic products and by 6% in the manufacture of wood and products of wood.
67% of the total production of manufacturing was sold to the external market. The share of sales for export was largest in the manufacture of computers and electronic products. According to unadjusted data, the sales of manufacturing production for export decreased by 5% and sales to the domestic market by 9% year on year.
In August, compared to July, the seasonally adjusted total industrial production decreased by 2% and the production of manufacturing by 3%.
In energy production, the production of electricity increased by 30% and the production of heat of remained at the level of August 2019.
