In July, retail trade turnover remained at last year’s level

According to Statistics Estonia, in July, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 919 million euros. Compared with July 2021, turnover remained at a similar level at constant prices.

Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with July last year, turnover increased by 2% in stores selling manufactured goods and by 1% in enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel. “The turnover of grocery stores continued to decline in July and fell by 2% year on year,” added Pihlak.

Among stores selling manufactured goods, the biggest increase was recorded in the turnover of other non-specialised stores selling predominantly manufactured goods, i.e. department stores, where turnover grew by 9% compared with July 2021. Turnover increased by 8% in stores selling second-hand goods and in non-store retail sale (stalls, markets, direct sale), by 6% in pharmacies and stores selling cosmetics, by 3% in other specialised stores selling predominantly computers and their accessories, books, sports equipment, games, toys, etc., and by 2% in stores selling via mail order or the internet. Turnover decreased by 2% in stores selling household goods and appliances, hardware and building materials. In stores selling textiles, clothing and footwear, turnover remained at the same level as in July last year.

Compared with June, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased by 1% in July. According to the seasonally and working-day adjusted data, turnover remained the same as in the previous month.

In the first seven months of 2022, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased by 6% compared with the same period of 2021.

The statistics are based on the VAT declaration data of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. Statistics Estonia performs the statistical activity “Financial statistics of trade enterprises (monthly)” for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in order to determine how the Estonian economy is doing.
