In January, enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel had the biggest impact on turnover growth in retail trade
According to Statistics Estonia, in January, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 730 million euros. Compared to January 2021, turnover increased by 8% at constant prices.
Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that turnover increased in grocery stores and stores selling manufactured goods as well as in enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel. Turnover growth was primarily driven by enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel where turnover grew by 29% compared to January 2021. “The turnover growth in enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel accounted for nearly a half of the total rise in the turnover of retail trade enterprises,” added Pihlak.
Compared to January 2021, the turnover of stores selling manufactured goods rose by 7%. Turnover grew in all economic activities. The highest growth (21%) was recorded in the turnover of stores selling second-hand goods and in non-store retail sale (stalls, markets, direct sale). A higher-than-average growth in turnover was also recorded in pharmacies and stores selling cosmetics (18%) and in stores selling household goods and appliances, hardware and building materials (9%).
The turnover of grocery stores increased by 1% compared to January 2021.
In January, compared to December, the turnover of retail trade enterprises decreased by 20%. This is a customary decline following Christmas and year-end sales. According to the seasonally and working-day adjusted data, the turnover in January was the same as in the previous month.
The statistics are based on the VAT declaration data of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. Statistics Estonia performs the statistical activity “Financial statistics of trade enterprises (monthly)” for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in order to determine how the Estonian economy is doing.
