In January, the biggest number of foreign tourists came from Latvia
According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2022, Estonian accommodation establishments served over 158,000 tourists, which is 64% more than in January 2021. The numbers of domestic tourists and foreign tourists both increased.
Helga Laurmaa, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that over 53,000 foreign tourists and over 104,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in January. Compared to January 2021, there were 412% more foreign tourists, but their number was still more than two times lower than before the pandemic. “The number of accommodated foreign tourists was comparable to January eighteen years ago. The number of domestic tourists grew by 22% year on year, and it was also 10% higher than in January 2019,” added Laurmaa.
For 71% of domestic tourists, the purpose of their trip was holiday, and 21% were on business trips. The biggest share of domestic tourists (21%) were accommodated in Harju county. 17% of domestic tourists stayed overnight in Pärnu county, 12% in Tartu county, 11 in Ida-Viru county and 8% in Saare county. Domestic tourists spent a total of 179,000 nights in accommodation establishments.
Compared to January 2021, there was an increase in the number of tourists from European countries as well as from countries outside of Europe. One of the reasons for the big change was the very low reference base. The biggest number of tourists came from Latvia – 11,000. Over 9,000 foreign tourists came from Finland. There were 8,000 tourists from Russia, 2,000 tourists from Lithuania and 2,000 tourists from Germany. 67% of the foreign tourists were accommodated in Harju county, followed by Pärnu (12%), Tartu (7%) and Ida-Viru (4%) counties. Foreign tourists spent a total of 115,000 nights in Estonia.
In January, there were 910 accommodation establishments open for tourists in Estonia, which is 11 establishments more than in January 2021. There were 20,000 rooms and 45,000 bed places available for guests. The room occupancy rate was 29%. The average cost of a guest night was 36 euros per person, which is six euros more than in January 2021 but one euro cheaper than in January 2019. The average cost of an overnight stay per person was 44 euros in Tartu county, 41 euros in Lääne-Viru county, 38 euros in Harju county and 30 euros in Pärnu county.
