In May, housing-related price changes had the biggest impact on the consumer price index

According to Statistics Estonia, in May, the consumer price index increased by 1.9% compared to April, and by 20.0% compared to May 2021. Goods were 15.7% and services 28.8% more expensive than in May last year.

Viktoria Trasanov, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared to May 2021, the consumer price index was affected the most by housing-related price changes, which contributed over 40% of the total rise in the index. “Electricity that reached homes was 146.3%, heat energy 61.2%, pipeline gas 217.3%, and solid fuels 67.3% more expensive,” explained Trasanov.

The price changes of food and non-alcoholic beverages accounted for a fifth and transport nearly a fifth of the total increase of the index. Petrol was 40.7% and diesel fuel 55.3% more expensive.

Among food products, the biggest increase compared to May 2021 was recorded in the prices of potatoes (125%), fresh fish (77.2%), other oils (62.3%), eggs (52.8%), and flour of cereals (43.3%).

Compared to April, the biggest impact on the consumer price index also came from housing-related price increases, which accounted for nearly 30% of the total rise. Price increases of food and non-alcoholic beverages added slightly less to the total increase. Motor fuel, the price of which increased 5.3%, accounted for nearly a fifth of the total rise.
