In June, the number of tourists was bigger than last year but still two times smaller than before the crisis
According to Statistics Estonia, in June 2021, Estonian accommodation establishments served 216,000 tourists, which is almost a third more than in June last year. There were more domestic tourists and fewer foreign tourists, but the total number of accommodated guests was significantly lower than in 2019 before the coronavirus crisis.
Helga Laurmaa, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, in June, the coronavirus continued to affect accommodation establishments. “The number of accommodated tourists increased compared to June 2020, but was still almost two times smaller than in 2019,” added Laurmaa.
In June, accommodation establishments served 184,500 domestic tourists, which is 52% more than in June last year and 21% more than in June 2019. However, the number of accommodated foreign tourists remained low – it was 31,700 in June, which is 24% less than in June 2020 and 88% less than in June 2019. Foreign tourists represented just 15% of the guests served by accommodation establishments, while in June 2019 accommodation establishments served 255,000 foreign tourists which was 63% of all accommodated guests.
As usual, the largest numbers of foreign tourists came from the neighbouring countries – 8,000 from Finland and 5,000 from Latvia. Nearly 1,900 tourists travelled to Estonia from Lithuania, 1,700 tourists came from Germany and 1,600 from Russia. The majority of tourists preferred to stay overnight in Harju county, followed by Pärnu and Tartu counties.
Tourists spent a total of 384,000 nights in accommodation establishments, of which domestic tourists accounted for 312,000 nights and foreign tourists for 72,000 nights.
In June, there were 1,168 accommodation establishments open for tourists in Estonia, which is 3% less than the year before and 15% less than in 2019. There were 22,000 rooms and 53,000 bed places available for guests. The room occupancy rate was 31%. The average cost of a guest night was 33 euros per person, which is three euros more than in the same month last year. The average cost of an overnight stay was 36 euros in Pärnu county and 35 euros in Harju, Saare and Tartu counties.
