In September, the consumer price index remained at the same level as in August
According to Statistics Estonia, in September, the consumer price index remained at the same level as in August 2023 and increased by 4.2% compared with September 2022. Goods were 5.7% and services 1.3% more expensive than in September last year.
Viktoria Trasanov, a team lead at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with September 2022, the consumer price index was influenced the most by the price increase of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which accounted for a half of the total rise. Compared with September last year, meat and meat products were 12.6%, flour, cereals and cereal products 11.9%, fruits 16.7%, and sugar, confectionery and preserves 11.5% more expensive. Mineral water, soft drinks and juices were 10.3% more expensive.
“Other bigger contributors to the index change were housing-related price changes (-6.9%) and motor fuels, as petrol was 3.8% and diesel fuel 10.2% cheaper,” added Trasanov.
The last time that the change of the consumer price index compared with the same month of the previous year was smaller than 4.2% was in June 2021, when it was 3.8%.
Compared with August, the consumer price index was influenced the most by the price decrease of food (-1.3%) and accommodation services (-12.8%), on the one hand, and by the end of the seasonal sales on clothing and footwear and by the 2.1% price increase of motor fuel, on the other hand.
