In June, more tourists stayed in accommodation establishments than a year ago
According to Statistics Estonia, accommodation establishments served over 384,000 tourists in June 2024, which is 14% more than in June last year. There were more domestic as well as foreign tourists accommodated.
Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, noted that, in June, the number of tourists increased year on year but was still 6% smaller than in June 2019 before the pandemic.
The analyst stated that 203,700 foreign and 180,500 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in June 2024. “Compared with June 2023, the number of foreign tourists was up by 25% and the number of domestic tourists by 4%. There were 81,200 tourists arriving from Finland and 21,500 from Latvia, which means that more than half of the foreign tourists came from the two neighbouring countries,” she explained, adding that 15,700 people travelled to Estonia from Germany, 9,600 from Lithuania and 7,600 from the United Kingdom. Compared with June last year, the number of tourists from Finland increased by 15%, the number of visitors from Latvia by 27%, from Germany by 40%, from Lithuania by 16% and from the UK by 17%.
81% of the foreign tourists were on holiday and 14% were travelling on business. The majority of foreign tourists (69%) preferred to stay overnight in Harju county, followed by Pärnu (13%), Tartu (6%), Saare (4%) and Ida-Viru (2%) counties. Lääne, Lääne-Viru, Valga, Viljandi and Võru counties each hosted 1% of the foreign tourists.
74% of the domestic tourists were on holiday and 16% were travelling on business. “The largest share of domestic tourists were accommodated in Harju county (24%), followed by Pärnu (17%) and Ida-Viru (9%) counties. Tartu and Saare counties each accommodated 8% of the domestic tourists,” Laurmaa noted.
Tourists spent a total of 693,100 nights in accommodation establishments: domestic tourists stayed for 307,100 nights and foreign tourists for 386,000 nights in total.
In June, 1,215 accommodation establishments served visitors in Estonia. There were 24,000 rooms and 57,500 bed places available for guests. The room occupancy rate was 53%. The average cost of a guest night was €48 per person, which is €1 more than in June 2023 but 17% more than in June 2019. The average cost of an overnight stay per person was €53 in Harju county, €51 in Tartu county, €47 in Pärnu county, €44 in Lääne, Lääne-Viru and Saare counties and €41 in Ida-Viru county.
