The consumer price index rose by 9.2% in 2023
According to Statistics Estonia, in 2023, the consumer price index increased by 9.2% compared with the average of 2022. Price changes related to food and non-alcoholic beverages had the biggest impact on the consumer price index in 2023.
Viktoria Trasanov, a team lead at Statistics Estonia, said that the biggest impact on the consumer price index in 2023 came from price increases related to food and non-alcoholic beverages, which accounted for almost two fifths of the total rise. “Among food products, the biggest increase occurred in the prices of sugar (42.2%), cocoa (29.9%), olive oil (26.6%) and sauces (25.6%). Petrol was 7.4% and diesel fuel 10.7% cheaper,” said Trasanov.

In December 2023, the consumer price index decreased by 0.1% compared with November 2023 and increased by 4.0% compared with December 2022. Goods were 2.5% and services 6.7% more expensive.
Trasanov said that, compared with December 2022, the consumer price index was affected the most by price changes related to housing and to food and non-alcoholic beverages, which each contributed over a fifth of the total rise. Among food products, the biggest increase was registered in the prices of olive oil (56.8%). Cocoa was 25.1%, canned milk 18.6% and confectionery 17.8% more expensive. Petrol was 6.4% and diesel fuel 12.3% cheaper.
Compared with November, the consumer price index was influenced the most by the 24% price increase of gas, on the one hand, and by the 4.1% price decrease of motor fuel, on the other hand.
