The consumer price index grew by 4.6% in August
According to Statistics Estonia, in August, the consumer price index increased by 0.5% compared with July 2023 and by 4.6% compared with August 2022. Goods were 7.6% more expensive and services 0.8% cheaper than in August last year. The last time that the change of the consumer price index compared with the same month of the previous year was smaller than 4.6% was in June 2021, when it was 3.8%.
Viktoria Trasanov, a team lead at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with August 2022, the consumer price index was influenced the most by the price increase of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which accounted for more than a fourth of the total rise. Compared with August last year, meat and meat products were 14.9%, milk, milk products and eggs 10.9%, flour, cereals and cereal products 14.6%, and vegetables 6.3% more expensive. “Other bigger contributors to the index change were housing-related price changes (-9.5%) and motor fuels, as petrol was 6.6% and diesel fuel 9.3% cheaper,” added Trasanov.
Compared with July, the consumer price index was influenced the most by the price increase of motor fuels (5.8%). The end of the seasonal sales on clothing and footwear, and the lower prices of fresh vegetables also had a bigger impact.
