The data revision policy and notification of corrections are described in the section Principles of dissemination of official statistics of the website of Statistics Estonia.
The published data may be revised if the methodology is modified, errors are discovered, new or better data become available within a year from the end of the reference period. |
SURVEY DATA Since 2016, the survey based data are not used. Until 2015, the data were collected as follows: In the years 2001–2011, the data were collected by questionnaire “Turnover” from all enterprises with 20 and more persons employed; from enterprises with 1–19 persons employed the data were collected by sample survey, using the stratified simple random sample. The population was stratified by economic activity and by number of persons employed. In the years 2012–2015, the data were collected by questionnaire “Turnover” from all enterprises with 20 and more persons employed; from enterprises with 2–19 persons employed the data were collected by sample survey, using the stratified simple random sample. In the case of enterprises with 1 person employed, the Tax and Customs Board VAT declaration (form KMD) data were used. The population was stratified by economic activity and by number of persons employed. ADMINISTRATIVE DATA Since 2016, the data of value added tax returns (form KMD) from the Estonian Tax and Customs Board are used. Turnover is calculated using the indicators of value added tax returns. DATA FROM OTHER STATISTICAL ACTIVITIES Not used
Monthly | |
The data are received from the Estonian Tax and Customs Board via the data exchange layer X-Road.
Arithmetic and qualitative controls are used in the validation process, including comparison with the data of previous periods and other surveys.
Microdata are aggregated to the level necessary for analysis. This includes summation of data according to the classification and calculating various statistical measures. The collected data are converted into statistical output.
Time series are seasonally adjusted and trend-cycle is estimated. |
In 2016, Statistics Estonia stopped data collection with the questionnaire “Turnover” and started using only the monthly data from the value added tax returns of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. This reduced the response burden of entrepreneurs and Statistics Estonia´s expenditure on data collection and increased the use of administrative data. It unfortunately meant that the indicator ‟Retail sales” is no longer available on a monthly basis, but the indicator will continue to be published on a quarterly and annual basis. Due to the change in the data source, the monthly news release “Retail trade” will focus on the turnover of retail trade enterprises, instead of the retail sales of such enterprises. |
