Organic farming area and number of organic livestock decreased last year
According to Statistics Estonia, in 2023, the organic farming area in Estonia was 225,300 hectares, representing 22.8% of total utilised agricultural area. 92% of the organic farming area was fully converted and the rest was under conversion. Compared with 2022, the organic farming area decreased by 2.5%, and 78 organic producers ceased activities.

In August, the producer price index rose by 15.5%
In August 2021, the producer price index of industrial output, which expresses changes in the producer prices of industrial goods manufactured in Estonia for the domestic market and for export, increased by 1.7% compared to July 2021 and by 15.5% compared to August 2020.

Number of e-commerce users increased again, enterprises start to use artificial intelligence
According to Statistics Estonia, in 2021, the biggest increase compared to the previous year occurred in people’s use of the internet for participating in online courses. The popularity of e-commerce also grew, with 62% of the population aged 16–74 having made online purchases. Among enterprises, the use of enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management software continues to increase. Enterprises are also trying out AI technologies.

In the second quarter, trade in services recovered to pre-crisis level
According to Statistics Estonia and Eesti Pank, in the second quarter, Estonia’s exports of services grew by 46% and imports of services by 125% year on year. Exports and imports of services amounted to 1.8 billion euros. Foreign trade in services was affected the most by growth in telecommunications, computer and information services, and transport services.

Trade volumes increased for the fifth month in a row
According to Statistics Estonia, in July, exports of goods increased by 29% and imports by 27% year on year. Trade growth was significantly influenced by the increase in the exports and imports of mineral fuels and base metals and articles of base metal.

Record number of domestic tourists accommodated in July
According to Statistics Estonia, in July 2021, Estonian accommodation establishments served 381,000 tourists, which is a tenth more than in the same month last year. The number of domestic tourists increased compared to both July 2020 and July 2019, while the number of foreign tourists remained significantly smaller than in previous years.

The number of job vacancies surpassed 10,000 (corrected on 08.09.2021)
According to Statistics Estonia, in the second quarter of 2021, there were 10,542 job vacancies in the enterprises, institutions and organisations of Estonia. The number increased by 30% year on year. More than 12,000 persons left their jobs on the employer’s initiative.

In August, housing again had a bigger impact on the consumer price index
According to Statistics Estonia, in August 2021, the consumer price index increased by 0.7% compared to July 2021 and by 5.0% compared to August 2020. Goods were 3.8% and services 7.3% more expensive than in August last year.

Electricity production from renewable energy sources increasing steadily
According to Statistics Estonia, in 2020, power plants produced 5,516 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity, which is three quarters of last year’s production. The volume of electricity produced from oil shale decreased by a half.

A four-member expert team will conduct a peer review of Statistics Estonia
This week, 6–10 September 2021, external experts will be visiting the Tallinn office of Statistics Estonia. The experts will evaluate the production of official statistics in Estonia against the quality requirements of Eurostat (the statistical office of the European Union) and against the European Statistics Code of Practice.

Industrial production grew by 10% in July
According to Statistics Estonia, in July 2021, the total production of industrial enterprises increased by 10% year on year. Production increased by 16% in energy production, by 6% in manufacturing and by 72% in mining.
